As the year winds down, I want to share a word of encouragement with you! I’m a homeschool mom, too!
If you are like me, you want the first part of the school year to fly by so that we can get to all the holidays and the break from school that comes with it. I long for our schedule to be free of the daily schoolwork, co-ops, field trips, and sports schedules that rule over us during the school year. And then, like that, it is here and we enjoy family, friends, and food! I push off what we might not have gotten done and have grand ideas for starting the New Year super organized and free of last-minute lesson planning. New resolutions are set to have no schoolwork tears from myself or my kids, not to overbook our schedule and, of course, to finish every page I assign in each subject every day. And then it hits…January!
Take a moment and just breathe. I am often reminding myself and homeschool parents I speak to daily through Essentials in Writing to just stop and breathe. Something so simple can be difficult at times. It is a new year, and we find ourselves rushing to catch up, switching curriculum, trying to get back into our school groove after a hectic holiday season, and there you have it…it is January, and you already feel defeated. Isn’t the New Year supposed to bring a renewed self and the accomplishment of the wonderful things I set out to do!?!
And then, just like that, the end of the year is here! Bam! Out of nowhere.
Don’t lose heart. Parents, you are doing exactly what you have been called to do for your children. Take it day by day, encourage your children to the best they can be in that moment whether they are writing, reading, or running outside. It’s okay to switch curriculum to find the best fit for your student. Your student won’t fall behind if you need to slow down, repeat a concept, or start over. That is the beauty of homeschooling!
